Why Local SEO Is Critical for Your Business

Nearly half of all Google searches have local intent. When someone searches “dentist near me” or “accountant in London”, they’re ready to act. If your business doesn’t show up in the map pack or local organic results, you’re invisible to your most valuable customers.

Local SEO is a different discipline to traditional SEO. It relies on proximity signals, Google Business Profile optimisation, local citations, reviews, and localised content. Most SEO consultants treat it as an afterthought. I treat it as a specialism.

As a local SEO specialist, I focus on the signals that actually move the needle for local rankings, not generic SEO tactics applied to a local business.

Local SEO Services

I provide local SEO services across London and the UK, covering everything from Google Business Profile setup to ongoing local visibility monitoring. Here's what's included.

Google Business Profile Optimisation

Full setup or audit of your GBP listing: categories, attributes, services, products, photos, Q&A, and posts. Your Google Business Profile is often the first thing a local customer sees. I make sure it's complete, accurate, and optimised to rank in the map pack for your target terms.

Local Citation Building & Cleanup

I audit your existing citations across directories like Yell, Bing Places, Apple Maps, and industry-specific platforms. Inconsistent NAP (name, address, phone number) data confuses Google and hurts your local rankings. I fix what's broken and build new citations on authoritative platforms.

Review Strategy

Reviews are one of the strongest local ranking factors. I help you build a system for generating genuine reviews from customers, responding to them properly, and using review content to strengthen your local authority. More reviews with higher ratings directly correlate with better map pack positions.

Localised Content Strategy

I create and optimise location-specific landing pages, local blog content, and service-area pages that target the geographic terms your customers actually search for. This goes beyond adding a city name to a title tag. It's about creating genuinely useful local content that Google wants to rank.

Local Link Building

Links from locally relevant sources carry extra weight for local SEO. I build links from local business directories, community organisations, local news sites, industry associations, and event sponsorships. These hyper-local signals strengthen your authority for geo-modified queries.

Local Competitor Analysis

I analyse who's currently ranking in the map pack and local organic results for your target terms, what they're doing that you're not, and where the gaps are. This tells us exactly what needs to happen to overtake them.

How Local SEO Differs From General SEO

This is the question I get asked most. Here’s the short version.

General SEO focuses on ranking your website for keywords nationally or globally. Local SEO focuses on ranking your business for searches with geographic intent, both on your website and on Google’s map pack.

Here are the key differences:

  • Proximity matters. Google factors in how close your business is to the searcher. That’s not a factor in regular SEO. (I built a free UULE generator so you can check your rankings from any location - it shows you what nearby customers actually see.)
  • Google Business Profile is a ranking surface. For local searches, your GBP listing often gets more visibility than your website. Most businesses underinvest in it.
  • Reviews directly influence rankings. A business with 200 genuine reviews will outrank one with 10, all else being equal.
  • Citations replace backlinks as a local trust signal. Directory listings with consistent NAP data tell Google your business is legitimate and established.
  • The map pack is a separate ranking system. You can rank #1 organically and still not appear in the local pack. They use different algorithms.
  • Local SEO targets a geographic area. You’re competing against businesses near you, not every business in the country.

Understanding these differences is why working with a local SEO expert matters. Generic SEO consultants often miss the local-specific signals that make the biggest difference.

Local SEO FAQ

How long does local SEO take to show results?

Most businesses start seeing improvements in map pack rankings within 2-4 months. Citation cleanup and GBP optimisation tend to show impact fastest. Content and local link building take longer but build sustainable visibility. The timeline depends on your current position, competition in your area, and how quickly changes are implemented.

Do I need a physical address for local SEO?

You need a Google Business Profile, which requires either a physical address or a defined service area. If you serve customers at their location (like a plumber or cleaning service), you can set up a service-area business without displaying your address publicly. If you have a storefront or office, your address is shown. Both types can rank in the map pack.

Can you help with multiple locations?

Yes. I work with multi-location businesses and franchises across the UK. Each location needs its own GBP listing, citation profile, and localised content. I help manage the complexity of keeping multiple locations consistent and competitive without duplicating effort.

How do reviews affect local rankings?

Reviews are one of the top ranking factors for the local map pack. Google considers quantity, recency, rating, and how you respond. A steady stream of genuine reviews signals to Google that your business is active and trusted. I help you build a review generation strategy that’s sustainable and doesn’t violate Google’s guidelines.

What's the difference between local SEO and Google Ads?

Google Ads gives you instant visibility but you pay for every click, and it stops the moment you stop paying. Local SEO builds organic visibility that compounds over time. Once you rank in the map pack and local organic results, you get clicks without paying per click. Most local businesses benefit from both, but local SEO delivers better long-term ROI.

How much do local SEO services cost?

Local SEO packages depend on the number of locations, the competitiveness of your area, and the scope of work. Monthly retainers for local SEO services typically range from £1,000 to £3,000+ for a single location, with multi-location businesses at the higher end. Can local SEO help service-area businesses without a shopfront?

Yes. Service-area businesses (electricians, cleaning companies, mobile hairdressers, consultants) can rank in the map pack using a service-area GBP listing. I optimise these listings along with localised landing pages targeting each area you serve. You don’t need a physical shopfront to benefit from local SEO.
